Why & When to get a SECOND MEDICAL OPINION?
The findings of this study indicated that when patients sought a second opinion, the original diagnosis was confirmed only
12% of the time. Among those with updated diagnoses, 66% received a more refined diagnosis in relation to the original, while 21% of the new diagnoses completely contrasted with the original diagnosis.
Did you know that medical errors occur in approximately 15% of all diagnostic cases? In the last twenty-five years, almost 29% of insurance claims have been attributed to diagnostic errors, which has cost insurance companies nearly USD 40 billion.

How It Works
- The Member (or an authorized person) enters their personal information (age, contact information, height/weight, gender, etc.) into a short online form, and includes the current diagnosis and/or a description of their medical condition and background
- The Member ‘uploads’ all documentation about the case including; – Current medical history – Medical reports – Laboratory tests results – Pathology reports – Radiology reports – Imaging study reports – Proposed treatment plan – List of medications
- HIMC organizes the information and sends to the assigned Specialist for review. If the Specialist has questions or requires additional information in order to complete the evaluation, the member is contacted to obtain what is needed
- The Specialist evaluates all the information received for the case and prepares a detailed report with his/her opinion including; opinion on the diagnosis, opinion and recommendations regarding treatment options available and answers to the questions from the patient received with the case
- The Member is notified by email when his/her SMO report is ready
- The Member logs into the portal and downloads his/her report
